CHRISTCHUECH, August 4; The announcement of Mr» George Gould's retirement froni the chairmanship of the Canterbury Jockey Club was contained in a, letter which the secretary 'conveyed to members of the committee. In it lie said: "I wish to be released from the chairmanship of the club as from the end of this month. My decision in this matter is deliberate and final. If a country member should succeed me I am, as treasurer, willing to attend to the' daily oflice routine as I have done for a long time. I hope to be able to enjoy race meetings at Eiccarton for my remaining years freed from the onus of stewardship."
