NOTHING TO DO

UNEMPLOYMENT COMMITTEES

About .two-' years ago>'this • YVellington. Unemployment Committee begaa to fade steadily awayj a Special meeting was held, much was tfatd of the futility of continuing iv existence when there'was nothing practical for the committee to do, and steps were taken towards winditifj-up. ■ They were never completed; but though on paper the- committee is still a live body, it has given no sign of life for- a long time. That is apparently the position 1n other centres as well, but in Napier .the local committee has made up its niind that as it is doing nothing, and can do nothing useful, it is time to disband; The chairman, Mr. Ay. 35. Barnard, M.P., said that i'oi- some months past, the 'members had been gravely dissatisfied with the position of the committee, for they had found that the administration of relief had been laid down in. so much de« tail by. the. Unemployment Board that the lield in which district committees could1 work was . very limited. On conic 6ccasionei the committee had been able to be of some real help to the unemployed, but. the amount of help that could be given was insufficient to justify the continuance of the committee, and members had also found that there was a tendency for the committee in its-work to ba identified with the policy of the Unemployment Board, over which it had no control whatover. ■'-.:■'. "The committee find • themselves out of harmony ou many matters with the Unemployment Board," ■ said Mr. Barnard, "and in view of our.general impotence to vary the .policy enunciated by the board, we feel that no good purpose wotild be eerved by continuing to act as a committee."
