Changing tidos and other circumstances have' compelled many to give up, somo of them when within easy roach of the goal, but thoi'o have been scvunteen to conquer the Channel, among them. ■ Miss Mercedes Gleitze. Of those successes all but three have been accomplished by making the French!'coast tlib starting point. Tho first man to swim the Channel was Captain Webb, who crossed from Dover to Calnis in August 1875. Since then the route taken by him has only been covered twice—by T. In tliis latest of somewhere aboiita dbzen1 attempts, Miss Gleitsio1 has again' failed to emulate the feat of Captain Webb, and tho two others -who have crossed from tho English coast. When in New Zealand an 1931 Miss Gleltzo gavo various demonstrations of her prowess of endurance in iho -water, but sho was unable to tackle tho main object of lier visit—a swim across Cook Strait. Ono achievcnVcnt in Wellington was in swimming from, the Wellington wharves to Day's Bay, ft performance which she regarded as "a very happy swim."'Mari^'other notable performances are credited to this famous swimmer, among, theni being a successful crossing at. the sixth attempt of the Straits of Gibraltar and a recordbreaking swim from Oapo Town to Robben Island and back.
