ADMIRAL PAKENHAM

LONDON, July 31. Obituary.—Admiral , Sir William Pakenham.

Admiral Sir William Pakenham was the second son of the late Bear-Admiral Hon. Thomas Alexander Pakenham, and was born in 1861. He- entered the Navy in 1874, became lieutenant in 1883, commander in 1896, captain in 1903, vice-admiral in 1918, and admiral in 1922. He was British naval attache with the Japanese fleet in the Eusso-Japanese war, and it is said that throughout the campaign he did not once sot foot ashore; he was present at most of the important naval- engagements of the waT, including the famous engagement in the Sea of Japan whan Admiral Togo annihilated the Russian Baltic Squadron. Sir William Pakenham commanded the Third Cruiser Squadron from 1913 to 1917, and was rear-admiral commanding the Battle Cruiser Fleet, 1917-19. He was com-mander-in-chief of the North American and West Indies station from 1920 to 1922, and was placed on the retired list in 1926, .. . .'-..1-....
