STRUGGLE FOR LIFE
MISHAP ON SHINGLE BARGE
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
AUCKLAND, This Day.
At half-past two this morning a shingle' barge capsized in the harbour opposite Devonport and a man on board, T. Daniels, struggled for his life for three-quarters of an hour before being picked up by the merest chance. The barge carried 100 tons of shingle, which began to shift after a squall. Daniels was trying to fix the cargo when the bargo began to sink. The shingle fell around him, and he jumped for it. On board the launch which had been towing the barge were Master C. B. Laiman and another. They could see nothing of Daniels, and began to think ho had been drowned. At last, they saw him clinging to a piece of wood. Ho had drifted 440 yards with the wind. Thqugh tired. when picked up, ho was in good condition.
