PONEKE V. ONSLOW
In a brisk game, unusually fast during the first half, Poneke showed themselves a more finished combination than Onslow, though the latter team never let up throughout the match. Both sides, which were trained up to the minute, contain several players of real brilliance, as well as some very hard workere.
From the kick-off, Poneke attacked strongly,. carrying play by means of forward rushes to the Onslow twenty-five. Here a penalty was incurred by Onslow, and Currie made no mistake. Fast work by Poneke forwards damaged the Onelow line, cramping back play, and gaining much, ground. After a fine run by Caulton, a scrum developed under the Onslow posts. Toms sent away the Poneke backs, and Jlatchard scored an unconverted try well out. Indecisive play, during which Cookson and Kendall made good runs, ended in an attack by Onslow, Hitching almost scoring. Webb kicked a nice penalty. . Currie scored similarly from the point of his previous kick. In the second half, a solid passing rush by Poneke broke through the Onslow defence, Cookson kicking a fine field goal. Onslow combined well, and, after forward rushes, the backs got away, Kitching scoring well out. The kick failed. A linekicking duel between Crisp and Toms and Onslow players gave way to a forward rush, from which. Debreceny scored an unconverted try. Later, Coulton made a long, fast run down the line/ Bending on Shearer to score under the posts*. Currie converted, making the final score 21-6 in Poneke's favour.
