PETONE'S BIG WIN

Outplaying their opponents in all departments of the game, Petone decisivelybroke their run. of failures against Eastbourne by running up a score of 36 to ,8. In view of the places the two1 teams occupy on the championship ladder, there was a big attendance of (spectators, who probably camo with memories of the excellent first-round match which Eastbourne won, though 1 scoriug only one try to their opponents' three. The contest was again keen,: but the one-sided scoring in the second spell robbed it of much of its interest. Petone's. superiority territorially was not a great deal more pronounced than it was the first time these teams met, but on Saturday they found it much easier to press their scoring movements home. Petone attacked practically throughout the first spell and it was only due to slips at critical moments that the margin in their favour was not greater ■t half-time. In the second spell backs and forwards worked as a strong combined force and Eastbourne were almost wholly on the defensive. They made one or two fcdremecs into Petone territory, but their

movements lacked precision and they were unable to increase their score.

The teams were:— Petone: Whitley; May, Peterson, Hux- . table; Spence, Pollock; O'Halloran; Sundgren, Lambourne, Selwood, Whittington, Keid, Martin, Abrim, and Carr. Eastbourne: Dingle; Wallington, Foley, Fuller; B. Plank, Diamond; Comau; J. and-N. Dellabarca, Griffiths, Spence, Gibbons, Price, Butterworth, and Clayton.. Losing the toss, Petone faced the sun in the first spell, which ended 13-8 in their favour. Martin and Keid scored tries, Selwood kicked a penalty goal, and, after a "Nicholls dodge," Pollock potted a goal. For Eastbourne, Gibbon^ and Clayton scored tries'/Fuller converting one. In the second spell tries were added for Petor.o by Huxlable (3), Whittington, and Lambourne. Pollock and Selwood converted two each, the latter's kicks being fine efforts from near the touchline.
