Welfare of teachers

OLD FIRM CHANGES HANDS

(Special to the "Evening Post.") ( NELSON, July 20.

The unemployment' among school teachers and the rationing of work were subjects discussed at a meeting of the Nelson branch of the Now Zealand Educational Institute. The following resolutions were adopted:—That this branch is of tho opinion that the present rationing scheme is inadequate to cope with the situation and the continual change of teachers is seriously impairing the efficiency of the schools. That the executive urge the Department to retain for another year's training in cultural subjects all students due to leave Training Colleges at tho end of this year. That in view of the times and circumstances, this branch strongly urges the executive to press the claims for the continuous employment of all rationed teachers, even at a »educed salary, for the year 1934. Reasons fcr the resolutions were advanced as follows: —la) The present large number of teachern out of employment; (b) the large number of teachers who will be out of employment as the result of decreased average attendance this year; (c) the necessity and the value of special training for cultural subjects; (d) the retention of the Training College staffs; (c) such a course will provide an adequate supply of specialist teachers for some considerable time; (f) it will ease the situation in regard to unemployment among teachers.

Tho ladies' basketball results were:— V.M.C.A. 4, Kiwi 3; Waratah 3, Kobins 2; Albion 10, Rivals 5; Tahuna A 7, Thistle 6; Rivals 9, Tahuna 85. Matches played at the Convent between Marlborough and Nelson Convents resulted as follows:— Primary, Blenheim 6, Nelson 5; Herbert Smith Cup (15-years and under), Nelson 16, Blenheim 11; senior B C«P. Nelson 20, Blenheim 5; senior A, Nelson 23, Blenheim 15.

A change, in the ownership of Nelson's oldest mercantile firm, Messrs. J. H. Cock and Co., which was established in 1842, took place on Thursday, when the business passed into the hands of Mr. F, S. Johns (manager of the New1 Plymouth branch of the firm), Mi-. H. C. Bebarfald (manager o£ the Wanganui branch), and Mr. E. 11. Thomson, of the Nelson branch, who have acquired Mr. H. C. Cock's interest in the business. Mr. Thomson becomfcs chairman of directors, and has also acquired a seat op the board of directors of the Anchor Shipping and Foundry Co., Ltd., thus maintaining the connection which has existed over a long period between the two firms. Mr. Cock will retain his position as managing director of the Anchor Shipping and Foundry Co. The three new partners > are old servants of the firm/ Mr. Johns joined in 1892, Mr. Thomson in 1005, and Mr. Bebarfald in 1006. The staff met yesterday afternoon and presented Mr. Cock with a silver salver and a pipe, as a mark of appreciation of the happy, relations which' have always existed between employer and employees. The salver is to be engraved with the signatures of all the melnbers of the old firm. Associated with the presentation was Mr. Fred J. Johns, who joined the firm in 1879r For many years he was manager of the Wanganui branch, but on his retirement on account of illhealth, has acted as the company's Wellington agent. Mr. Johns was unable to be present, but sent cordial expressions of goodwill to Mr. Cock. Mr. Cock sincerely thanked the staff for their' expression of goodwill and also for their co-operation and loyalty over a long period. He gave an interesting history .of the firm from its foundation up to. the present time, '
