NASEBY MINING

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—lt has never been claimed that the Naseby area is not rich. Rather, I firmly believe that, given an adequate amount of water, it would yield a very great amount of gold, as, although the gold deposits are small, they are very evenly distributed. Water means pressure for sluicing, and a great pressure, is essential for successful mining at Naseby. Your correspondent glosses over the question of water, but this is the obstacle which is retarding the progress of Naseby, and unfortunately there is' no possiblity of more ■water.-'Your correspondent' rnimt . agree 'with me when I affirm that the Public Works Department could not sell water to fifty more men, let alone 6000 as was modestly stated in,the Original interview. "I entirely agree that the Unemployment Board's mining scheme is an excellent one, but a man going down there penniless cannot expect to make his fortune or even "a comfortable living." Here, it would be as well to point ojut, that it is absolutely necessary for the (Government to appoint supervisors to-instruct the.men how to go about things in the right W£iy, instead of letting them arrive and> find out the best way themselves and■• consequently ■ lose a lot of valuable time. I might say that my statements have, riot only the; ; wholehearted support; of, resident miners,"who have their own interests to protect," but also all the Newcomers to Naseby.... Incidentally, I tooxcame vback.upon medical advice.—l am, etc., ' ' ■■ ,'■:•' LOUIS S.'HANCOCK.
