ANNUAL FUNCTION

The Evans Bay Yacht and Uotor-boat Club is. fortunate in possessing a large' number of trophies, mainly valuable cups, carrying miniatures, for. annual competition, and these made an imposing display at the prize-giving ceremony- held in the clubhouse last evening. As usual, the function Avas largely attended by members and. their friends, and representatives of kindred clubs. J. Keane, commodore of the club, pi'esMod.- • . ■ ■ ...

After welcoming the visitors. Captain] Keane referred to the difficulties which the club, in common with others, had experienced during the past season and the tine spirit of co-operation among its members which'had enabled if to maintain its sound position. He emphasised the valuable work which yachting clubs could do in instilling a love of the sea into the youth of the country, saying that it rested with the senior, yachtsmen to im^ part that, knowledge and training which had provodso useful-in the war years. The only way to avoid another war was to be well, prepared for war. j\lr. 0. A.'Moller, chairman of the Wellington Provincial Yacht and Motor-boat Association, eulogised the club^s hospitality and efficiency, and the important part it was taking in local yachting affairs;. A big factor in the club's success was the fact that it had always had the best of officers.. The support given to the asso^ ciation was particularly pleasing. Wellington Harbour was not the best, for cruising, but it was fitted to1 produce the best racing men in New Zealand, and the association was doing'its best to encourage chxss racing with a view ultimately to defeating all-comers. Mr. Moller also spoke of the New Zealand Yachting Council, and expressed the hope that the local crews would co-operate in selecting crews to bring the new championship cups to Wellington. . .Representatives of kindred clubs extended their :congratula'tions to Evans Bay. on the success of the past season, and their best wishes for the future. The. prized were presented by Mr. J. Paterson, president of the club,' who reminded the gathering of tlie remarkable progress achieved since the establishment of the club in 1919, and paid a tribute .to the'"late1 Mr. A.
