NEW BRITISH DRY DOCK
OPENING AT SOUTHAMPTON

RUGBY, July 20.
Tho world's largest dry dock, will b« opened at Southampton next Wednesday when the royal yacht Victoria and Albert with their Majesties aboard will break the red, white, and blue ribboa stretched across its entrance.
The. new graving dock, which cost over £2,000,000, is part of the Southern Railway Company's £13,000,000 dock extension scheme, and constitutes on© of the most remarkable achievements in tho history of British engineering. Tho dock holds 260,000 tons of water, and the sea is kept back by a hugo steel door weighing 4600 tons* During its construction, in . which 456,000 tons of concrete were used, the sea was held away by a great earthen bank reinforced 'by a curtain of steel.
