JAPAN'S COMPETITION
MENACE TO COLONIES
BRITAIN PREPARED

The question of Japanese trade cot** petition was raised in the House of Commons by Mr. T. Levy (C), who declared it a- menace to the colonies. Two valuablo British industries, silk and cotton, were being killed by low standard wages and conditions of lif» in Japan. Sir Philip Cunliffe-Lister, Secretary; of State for the Colonies, said that he, in conjunction' with the Board of Trade, wero engaged in negotiations with the Japanese Government which, it was hoped would be successful. If not it was certain the Government | would be prepared to take whatever [steps were necessary to protect British interests. Japanese competition was serious, and must be dealt- with as • separate proposition.
