HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

The first meeting of. the 1033-34 sc.-isoi) of the general committee of the Wellington Horticultural Society was held last Wednesday evening. The president (Mrs. Kiiox Gilnier) expressed pleasure at the excellent attendance of over thirty, which, she said, augured well for* the success of the coming season. She also remarked on the wonderful attendance at the recent annual meeting, -which had beeu a success from every point of view. An invitation to visit the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Free Kindergarten, to view the work in training the children, was accepted with thauks, and it ■was left to the president to arrange a date. ' ' •

It was decided to reduce temporarily the annual fee for affiliated societies to 10s Od. A sub-committee.was set up. to.draft suggested amendments to. the rules governing the Loder. Cup competition for'native flora, for transmission to the Loder Cup committee. ~. •

Show dates were approved as follows: — Spring show, September 27, 1933; rose show, November 22, 1033; and autumn show, April 19, 1934. . Schedule, advertisements, and special prizes committees were' set up, and it was decided that the annal interest on the late Dr. Arnold Izard's legacy should be devoted to'a special prize to be called the Dr. Arnold Izard Memorial Prize, the details of which.are to.be left to the schedule committee.. ■ ' , '

If was agreed to continue. the flower circles, which were so popular last season, and.'the following circles were arranged for:—Begonias, • . pansies, roses, dahlias, sweet peas,--hydrangeas,- narcissi, cut flowers, rhododendrons, chrysanthemums, gladioli, and ;iiovelties.
