RAIN IN NORTH ISLAND

According to the forecast issued at noon today, the weather is expected to be cloudy to' overcast with some rain in the North Island, "heavy falls teing likely between Hawko's Bay and the Bay of Plenty. In /the South. Island the weather will be mainly fair to fine, but some misty Tain on parts of the Marlborough coast is expected. Winds are likely to be' southerly to easterly, strong'to gale force in places in and north, of Cook Strait, elsewhere light to moderate. Temperatures -will bo cold, with frosts in the South Island. A cyclone has moved, slowly over the north Tasman Sea, and . this morniiig Vv.'is centred off Cape Maria Van Dieinan, while an intense anticyclone has been covering ca.stcvn Australia, exlending across the south Tasmau Scii. and southern New Zealand. Winds have consequently bloivn from between cast and .south, and .have graduully freshened in and north of "Cook Strait. Some heavy Tain has fallen at times in tho northern extremity of tho North Island, but although jiomewhat cloudy in eastern districts it was mainly fair on both Saturday and yesterday. Sinco last night, however, conditions havo become unsettled over the wholo of the North Island with rain in tho northern and eastern portions. Temperatures have been, very cold. At Auckland on Saturday it was foggy early, but cleared about 8 a.m., and the day was fair though cloudy with- an easterly breeze. Similar conditions prevailed yesterday. Baiii fell there last night. In Wellington it was dull and misty on Saturday with a southerly breeze. Yesterday was also mostly cloudy, but thcro wero brief sunny intervals. Temperatures were very cold.
