Bain interfered with the county [cricket matches, and the bowlers reaped I a harvest of wickets. Fender, Goddard, and Bowes each took eight wickets in an innings, and A. Staples ia two innings took eleven wickets at excepi tionally small cost. Although the bowlers were on top in most cases, there were instances of good scoring by ' batsmen. Valentine, Carr, and Creese i made centuries, and Hobbs, Astill, and Keeton were not far short of the century mark. Most of the matches were won outright. The results are:— . • Surrey v. Essex, at the Oval.— Surrey, 268 , (Hobbs 85); Essex, 60 , (Gover six -for 17) and 102 (Fender eight for 29). Surrey won by an innings '• and 100 runs. ■ Somerset v. Northamptonshire, at i Bath.—Somerset, 141 (Jupp six for ; 69) and 167 (Jupp four for' 42); Northamptonshire, 246 (Wellard four 1 for 35) and 63 / for two wickets. Northamptonshire won by eight ■ wickets. i ■Warwickshire v. Kent, at Birniing- ■ ham. —Kent, 403 for six wickets, dei elared (Valentine 164); Warwickshire, ;63 for two wickets. Match drawn. i Worcestershire v. Leicestershire, at ' Kidderminster. — Leicestershire, 271 1 (Astill 89) and 71 (Perks five for 28, '■' Perry five for 42);-Worcestershire, i 75 (Astill four for 38) and 16£> for, eight wickets (Smith seven for 58). Worcestershire won by two wickets. Gloucestershire v. Yorkshire,, at Gloucester.—Yorkshire, 227 and 153 (Qoddard eight for 77); Gloucestershire, 14.4 (Verity six for 55) and 135 (Bowes eight for .69). Yorkshire won by 101 runs. Lancashire v. Glamorgan, at Manchester.—Glamorgan, 133 and 21 for no wickets; Lancashire, 159 for three wickets, declared. Lancashire won on the first innings. Nottinghamshire v. Derbyshire, at Nottingham.—Nottinghamshire, 408 for four wickets, declared (Keeton 86, Carr 137 not out); Derbyshire, 88 (A. Staples seven for 20) and 199 (A. Staples four for 19). Nottinghamshire won by an innings and, 121 runs. .Hampshire v. Middlesex, at Ports-mouth.-—Hampshire, 395 (Creeso 165 not out); Middlesex, 78 (Boyes. six for Si) and 198 (Herman five for 91). Hampshire' won by an innings and 119 runs.
