SCOUT NOTES

(By "The Scribe.") Group committees can, and 3n most cases do, help in the important duties of ensuring a place for the lads to meet in, -finding Scout and Cub masters as vacancies occur, and helping the groups to earn iho funds necessary to enable them to carry on. Mr. James Dcvine has been recomrueuded for appointment as Commissioner in the AVellington area. We oifer him congratulations and welcome to" that rank. Further recomtuendatiom will follow in due course, and we should soon have nt least two Commissioners for each district. " The Society of St. Vincent de Paiil is giving practical anil helpful assistance to the Scout movement generally. Several groups have been formed in connection with the society, and a further increase in the number is hoped for. The new units are: St. Bernard's Catholic Group. The crew has been very fortunate in receiving very instructive and interesting talks by Dr. B. AVriglit, Mr. a. Miller, and Mr. C. Clift. On June 14 the group assembled to witness the presentatiou of warrants and service stars by the District Commissioner, Mr. Foster. The ceremony was held by campfire light, and was most impressive. Warrants were presented to Mias M. Cameron (A.C.M.), Mr. R. Johns (A.S.M.), and Mr. J. Badland (A.S.M.). Rover Service Stars.were presented to (R.L.) J. Hood/ (S.R.M.) J. Badland, (R.M.) C. Christison, (R.M.) E. Trail, Rovers R. Johns, AY. Davidson, G. Smith', P. Hansard. Scout Service Stars were received by (P.L.) G. Smith, (P.S.) "R.-H. Johns, (P.S.) AVilson, Scouts R. Halcrove, D. The Arawas, consisting of the Lion, Tui, and Raven Patrols, meet on Tuesday nights, and the Rangatane, consisting of the Kiwi, Weka, and Eagle Patrols, on Thursday nights. The AVoIf Cub Pack is very active, and it :is quite possible that they will also have to have two meetings each week. Thirty attended the ceremony on AVeduesday night. They are to have a night of their own soon, when Service Stars and Tenderpads will be presented. . The St. Augustine, Petone, group have ■overy reason to be pleased with the results of the hard work of preparation for their concert, which was held on June 19. The seating capacity of the Oddfellows' 'Hall was taxed to the utmost, and quite a few people were standing. _The programme was a very comprehensive one, all branches of the group providing fare of n most entertaining kind, and a number of outside helpers taking part, these including Mr. Barton Ginger, Mr. Frank Bryant, Mr. Charles Burridge (with his pal "Sammy"), Mr. Ernest Glading, and not to be overlooked, Miss Judy Lewis, a, little girl who recited beautifully. The group Scoutmaster (Mr. R. Aldrich) ■returned thanks to those present, and assured them that the proceeds would very greatly assist the building fund. The ■position of stage manager was filled with efficiency by the Rev. G. V. Gerard, 3). C.C, group chairman, who was assisted by Scouters R. Aldrich, and the group .secretary (Mr. C. Halford). Mr. Halford had. taken up the organisation of the concert with great keenness, and its success ,\vas the outcome of his energetic work. The ladies and gontlemcn of the group comsriittee who worked behind the scenes as itsual deserve the highest praise. The Institute Troop met as usual on Tuesday night, with a good attendance. The senior patrol received some very fine instruction from Sergeant-Major Sharp in the preparation of foodstuffs for weekend ■camps. S.M. Sharp is taking this patrol through a course of camp craft, which will cover a period of about three months. The writer wishes he could spare the time to take this course also, as the instructor certainly knows what he is talking about. It is good to see the boys taking a kee,n interest in the matter. The Institute Oubs put in a good evening last Monday. It was fine to see them all working with n will, some trying hard to master the idea of flag signalling, others with ropes at knot making instruction, and others again sitting with ears cocked while the Old Wolf taught them tenderpad work. The bazaar in aid of the group funds will he opened by his worship the Mayor on Saturday at 2 p.m. Last Thursday -even.ing saw the' Rover crew working hard preparing articles to be placed on the Scout stall, and everyone else Connected with ,the function is getting on with the job in fine style. This bazaar will differ from most others in that all articles, will be offered at prices far below the average. So roll up,, everyone, and do both yourselves and the group a good turn by buyring freely. There will be amusements for jboth young and old—Aunt Sally, shooting ftallery, dart throwing, etc., with excelHent prizes^ A free concert will be given jri the evening, when Mrs. Dentice will be an attendance at her Bweet stall. The St. Mark's Wolf Cub pack now jneet on Wednesday evening, prior to the Itover crew. Rover Leader Constable, assisted by Scout D. Ross, is helping, the pack along, pending the appointment of a permanent cubmaster. A knowledge of •the Jungle Book characters' is necessary to interest the pack in the Law of the [Wolf Cub Pack.
