GIFTS TO NEW\ PLYMOUTH

NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day

New Plymouth parks and reserve's will benefit very materially from .bequests mado under the will of tho late Mr. C. S. Sanders, who died last week. The bequests are as follows: —£1000 to AVestcrn Park Board, £500 to the board controlling reserves, £350 to the New Plj-mouth Borough . Council for Rhododendron Dell in Pukekura Park, £250 to . tho New Zealand Division of the Empire Cancer Campaign, and £250 to the Stratford Public Hospital. The residue of the estate, after private bequests, is bequeathed on trust for tho benefit of Pukekura Park, Now Plymouth. ■ , . . ■

It is understood that the bequest to Pukekura Park is likely to be over £5000. The generosity of Mr. Sanders in leaving almost the -whole of his estate to the public has created a profound impression in New Plymouth. It is tho biggest gift to the town since the death of the late Mi, Newton King. The- bequests made by Mr. Sanders are typical of his great love of Nature, which was-tho dominant force throughout his life, whether at Ngaere, where he spent his earlier years, or at Westown, New Plymouth, where ho later settled. lie was the founder of the beautiful Ngaero gardens. When he erune to New Plymouth his love and appreciation of beauty—bush and garden— still moved him, and he made one'of the finest gardens in the district. Mr. Sanders was S2 years of age. Ho was born at Marwood, Devonshire, and his fa-ther came to New Zealand when Charles was 'Only a few years' old. Tho i cat of the family* followed in 1860 In the sailing vessel Annie Longton^ which, arrived .at Nelson afto'r a slow passnge: With tho ambition of being a landholder, Mr. Sanders came to Inglcwood, where he .took, a block of bu&h land in Moa Block. Ho w,as one of the first settlers in the district. •
