LESS DRINKING, LESS REVENUE.
,A footnote to contemporary domestic history of New Zealand is furnished in Carrol's New Zealand. "Trade Review." In analysing Government revenue from duties"and excise oh liquors it is shown that the aniount of local beer on which excise duty was paid in the past March quarter was 6% per cent, less than in 1932, 19 per cent, less than 1931, and 34 per cent, less than 1930, while for the year ending March 31 the decrease was 10% percent, on 1931-32; 25 per cent, ou 1930-31, and 32% per cent, on" 1929-30. ;It .is also-shown that' New Zealand's consumption of spirits has dropped . from three-quarters of- a gallon, per head before the,war to a fifth of a gallon, last year; and beer from a peak of twelve gallons per head in 1920 to five and threequarter gallons last' year.
