The Hon. Colonel G. J. Smith, M.L.C., and Mrs. Smith arrived in Wellington I tliis morning from the south. I Messrs. D. Reese and G. W. Reid, of the Railways Board, left Wellington, last evening for the South Island. Dr. 3. Hight, Rector of Canterbury; College, arrived this morning from thu south. . . Dr. R. Church, Dunedin, was among" the passengers who arrived in Wellington from the south this morning. The- Minister of Labour (the Hon. A. Hamilton) wil leave for the'south, tonight, and will attend, a function at Waimato on Monday night ia honour, of tho Hon. J. Bitchener. He will return to Wellington on Thursday. Mr. W. Bromley, a member of tha Unemployment Board, is leaving for tha South Island by tonight's ferry steamer. Mr. K. D. Cosgrove, ■who for tha past five and a half years' has been ou the clerical staff of the Supreme Court, Wellington, has been promoted to a position in the Magistrate's Court in Auckland, and leaves tonight to : take up his new appointment. Today Mr. Cosgrove was met by his fellow-officers, and was presented with a travelling rug. The registrar (Mr. W. W. Samson) made the presentation on behalf of the staff, and Mr. Cosgrove suitably, replied.. : . .. -~-.. The resignation of Dr. I. A. Henning from the positions of lecturer in. modem languages and warden of Wei^ Hpuse was received with" regret" by tha Victoria College Council last, evening, and appreciation was.expressed of his services in both capacities. Dr. Henning is leaving Wellington to take up a position in Australia. Dr.-I. L. G. Sutherland was appointed* warden of Weir. House. Mr. P. J. o ''Regan v has returned to Wellington from the West Coast, whora he has-been attending the Court ofArbitration. Opportunity was taken at last night* meeting of the New Zealand Radio Institute to make the presentation of a suitcase to Mr. C. W. Smithy in recognition of his services in the initial organisation of the institute. The recipient, who has served flve years as technical editor of the "Radio Record," and editor of the "Radio Times," is relinquishing his posts and intends to leave shortly for Australia to take uj> further radio journalistic work m that country. ■ . . ' . On the. motion of the chairman (Mr. P. Levi), the Victoria College Council resolved last evening to send a letter of sympathy to tiio council .of Otago. University ou the death of its Chancellor,- Sir Thomas Sidey. , It was also decided to send a suitable'letter to Lady Sidey. . The Wairarapa Secondary Education. Board decided at its meeting at Master* , ton last night to convey to Mr. T. B* Strong (late Director of Education) it* thanks and appreciation for the services he has rendered to the cause of education over a long number of years, . and wishing him many years of enjoyment in his retirement from official duties (states the "Post's" Masterton correspondent). Speaking ia support of the,motion Mr. Ales. Donald said that not many people had agreed with the views and policy of Mr. Strong. "But," ho added, "when we get :v director of education appointed whom we all agree with, then I say''God help education in New Zealand.'" Mr. R. Brown, secretary of the 'Wellington Hospital Board, ' has been, granted three months' sick leave. At the meeting of the board yesterday Mr* F. Castle'(chairman) said that during the past few years Mr. Brown, owing \ to the economic pressure, had had much additional work and worry imposed upon him. This had resulted ia his having temporarily to take a rest. • Mr. Castle said he. was sure that all tho members of the board would regret tha indisposition of Mr. Brown, and would wish his early recovery and return to duty. Mr. H. F. O'Leary, who has been! attending the 'Supreme Court sessions in»Napier, has returned to Wellington. .
