SUCCESSFUL SHOW

HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

A meeting of the general committee of the Wellington Horticultural Society was held on Wednesday evening last. The president (Mrs. Knox Gilmer) congratulated the committee on the excellent attendance and announced that the native garden competition for 1932-33 for his Excellency the Governor-General's trophy had been: won by Mr. A. s Atkinson, of York Bay. I The Wellington branch of the Women's I Free Kindergarten Union wrote thankins: the president and the society for its help with its "Garden Book," and for space at the autumn show. A statement regarding the recent autumn show was presented aud adopted. It was mentioned that letters of.thanks had already been sent to the Pioneer Club, Messrs. .T.. AVaugh and Son (display of palms, etc., in vestibule), Mr. H. S. Hislop (window display), and the judges of the various sections. The president thanked all members for assistance given at this show, especially the ladies' committee (decorative and tearooms). Mr. Fox, on behalf of the committee, thanked Mrs. Gilmer and her flower stall assistants.for their help .towards the sue- ! cess of the show, and' also the. ladies' committees. He mentioned the marked improvement in the decorative sections during the past season. On Mr, N.. A. Grant's motion, a.hearty vote of thanks was passed to the president for her work throughout the season. In acknowledging the vote. Mrs. Knox Gilmer stated that it had always been a i)leasure to help the society.

Tho death of Mr. J. "W. Joynt, M.A., who was formerly the representative of the University of New Zealand in England, was referred to at the meeting of the Victoria. College .Council last evening, and it; was decided to send a letter of condolenco to Miss Joynt. The chairman (Mr. P. Levi) said that Mr. Joynt -had been a lecturer at Victoria College, and later, during his long service at Home, ho had been of considerable assistance to many connected with the collegel.
