EXTRAORDINARY ENDURANCE
After a lacehoise. The Right Knight, had finished fouith in a race at Mallow, County Cork, on March 29, and walked eighteen miles to its stable, its owner. My. J. J- Turcell, * well-known.. Irish racing man, was surprised and pained to find that the animal had been running with a broken back. After its iujury the horse jumped three fences and three water jumps. It was shot the following morning. - ''I cannot recall a previous case in which a horse has jumped and walked «b vigorously after breaking or even splintering the backbone," said a well-known London veterinary surgeon. ''What usually happens in such cases is that, although the bones aie definitely broken they do not separate 'immediately. They are held in position by the membrane, which sooner or later is ruptured by a ,violent movement. I have known instances in which a horse has broken a bone without the fact becoming known until the horse has died and a ijoit-morlcm examination been held.'
