The Melbourne Cup wni restored to the £10,000 mark a-few y«ara ago, but the depression came along and bock it dropped' to £7000. The richest lace ever run in Australia was the Melbourne Cup j of 1923. It was worth £13,288, of which ! the share of the winner, Bitalli, was | £10,288. Next best was the Melbourne . Cup of 1890. That was worth £13.230, and Carbine, tho-winner, earned £10,230. Veiy close to that was the Melbourne Cup of 1925, when "Windbag earned £10,215 and the total value of the race vraf £13,215. The Melbourne Cup of 1929, won by Nightmarch, was also very rich. -This was an all-New Zealand victory, the hoise having: been Dominion-bred, owned m Christchurch, picpsred hy a Riccarton trainer, and ridden by a, >ew Zealand jockey. The second hor&e, Paquito, had a similar set of acressoties. It was worth £12.422, of which Nishtmsr«h"s slwe was £0422.
