PETER DAWSON COMING
Music lovers will welcome Messrs. J. and N. Tart's preliminary announcement that the woi-M-farned baritone, Peter Dawson, associated with a noted Spanishl pianist, Tapia. Caballero, will give the first of three concerts in the Wellington Town Hall on Thursday, June 1. This superlative attraction at present crowding the conceit halls of Australia is due back in London in August; therefore engagements'must'be limited to.the four centres, l'eter Llawson has established au amazing; popularity in the concert -world in which it is safe to sny ho has no rival and that popularity is daily increasing. He is an artist who accepts public musical taste as his judge and chooses his songs accordingly. In a recent interview he said: "It is impossible to avoid noticing howpublic taste has .changed in regard to music generally. The old style of ballad is now as dead as can be. Today, they demand songs of a class that twenty years ago would have been considered highly duMsk-nl. That is the measure of improvement in'taste, i In the place of the ballad we have the art song, a type which has atmosphere rather than drama, and is, above all, a highly artistic blend of words and music. Moreover, it is British through and through. Ido not believe in singing foreign songs anil arias in foreign languages. Often, such songs from well-known operas are hackneyed beyond toleration, and bore audiences to death. Bet-ides, not one person in a thousand understands them. Surely English singers can sin?,' in their own language best, and leave foreigners to theirs." Perhaps it is this aptitude of giving his audience what they require that causes Mr: Dawson's visit to be so happily anticipated. And also there is an added attraction in the forthcoming season, in the form of Tapia Caballtro, the Spanish solo pianist. The box plan and other interesting particulars are advertised.
