CANTERBURY'S POSITION
■ Tho arrangement of interprovincial Rugby fixtures made when delegates were in Wellington for the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union indicates that it will not be until the Canterbury team has carried out ats northern tour that the main Ranfurly Shield challenges will bo met. According to tho programme which has been drawn up, Ashburton will be first off the mark this season in the bidding tor possession of the trophy, and this challenge will "be decided on August 2, After that Canterbury will come north on tour f6r about" a fortnight, after which the shield holders will be kept busy at home. , In the event of Ashburton being successful in lifting the shield, Southland will have an opportunity in vthe course of their northern tour. They are to. meet Canterbury at Christchurch on August 19. On the following Saturday Otago, also coming north, will make their bid for possession of the shield if Canterbury is in possession.' West Coast, who put up such a splendid and unlucky performance last season, are to meet the shield holders on September 2. and, if this challenge fails, Wellington's turn will follow. The .meeting of Wellington's challenge has been set down for September 6. Long before this Wellington will have met Canterbury at Wellington. Buller follow Wellington with a match against the shield holders —on September 9. Taranaki and South Canterbury are next on the list for matches with' Canterbury at Christchurch. . :■• WELLINGTON'S PROGRAMME. ; Quite a good representative. programme has been mapped out already so far as Wellington is concerned, and as, an'.>additional attraction there will be the.inter-island match, to be playejd here on September 23.
