"GIRLS' WEEK"
LADY ROBERTS "AT HOME"
To give some residents of the Hutt the opportunity of. hearing something of the work of the Y.W.C.A., Lady; Roberts invited a number of friends to meet Miss Jean Stevenson, National Secretary of the Y.W.C.A., at her home yesterday. Miss Stevenson chatted informally; about her work in Australia and NewZealand and also abroad. She paid % tribute to the interest of New Zealand, women in social work, but said she thought they often did not think of the welfare of society as a whole. Some thought that all that was necessary wa» to provide for the welfare of childreiit whereas the mental and moral and phy; sical welfare of all youth were the concern of the adults of the community, who laid claim to "public spirit" and who had faith in building a better, future for the nation. Telling of the work of the Y.W.C.A., Miss Stevenson showed how that>rganisatipn had adapted itself to the need* of the community during the change* that had taken place in the past 50 years. The work of protection, of providing for health and recreation, training in practical arts, friendship and true citizenship was carried on in all sorts of ways, and the forms changed according to the needs and the times. Miss Stevenson spoke of the work of citizenship training as it affects girl* in their "teens." Many questions were asked, and Misi Bridgman (General Secretary of the Wellington Y.W.C.A.) told stories and incidents of the work done in this cify. Lady Boberts said she felt that thosa present should do what they could to help, and goods for a stall on thai "Street Day," May 31, were promised. A delightful tea was served, the table being charmingly decorated with browal chrysanthemums arid autumn leaves. At the Y.W.O.A. yesterday morning, representatives of various College Old Girls' Associations'met Miss Jean! Stevenson, and discussed with' her plans by which their associations could help in the forthcoming "Street Day" dur« ing "Girls'. Week" at. the end of the month. The colleges represented wer« Nga Tawa, Queen Margaret, Solway* Wellington East, and Wellington Girls* College. After discussion, each group signified its willingness to take part in! the "Street Day" appeal, and a spktt« did number of young collectors was as« sured. • ■ . • Invitations broadcast amongst thd, business firms of the city are likely to| meet with a large response next Tuesday evening, the occasion being a splendid community sing organised by the! Y.W.C.A. for the young men and women! of the city. Under the able leadership; of Mr. Will Mason, assisted-by Mr. Harry Wilson, Mr. H.-P. Wood, and the Optimists' Choir, those participating are assured of much fun andl gaiety. After the community singing there will be opportunity for dancing; and supper. v • '.:
