OBITUARY
MRS. JOHN KIRKCALDI&
Many who have known her generous nature and her charming personalitywill regret to'hear of the death of Mrs. Mary. Ann; Kirkcajdie, widow of the late Mr. 'John ■ Kirkcaldie, head of the iirm of Kirkcaldie,and Stains. She was the daughter of the late Mr. Edward Hall,,of the engineering firm of J. and E. Hall, Dartford, Kent, and her mother before her marriage -was Miss Elizabeth Stains, sister of Mr. Robert Stains. The. latip Mrs. Kirkcaldie came .to New Zealand in 1868 to visit her uncle, Mr. Eobert Stains, and in 1870, married Mr. John Kircaldie. Of a very retiring disposition, Mr 3. Kirkcaldie was all her life very fond of gardening, and combining the wonderful qualities of the Victorian era with the broadened outlook of modern times, she was loved by all who knew her. A wonderful mother and sister, she had an unusual depth of understanding, and her loving kindness was felt by a great many who were fortunate enough to know her. Most of her spare time she spent in making garments for the poor children, which she sent to orphanages and societies. She was actively interested in the Society for the Protection of Women and Children, of which she was at one time president, and was for many years treasurer. She was also keenly interested in the Plunket Society, to which she and her family have always been generous contributors. . / She. was a member of St. John's Church, Willis Street, and was always a regular attendant. Aged 84 years, the late Mrs. Kirkcaldio is survived by six of her eight children. They are Messrs. Sidney and Keith . Kirkcaldie (Wellington) and Mesdames Eattray, C. H. Mirams, and Finch (all of Wellington), and Mrs. A. B. Rose (of Hampshire, England). She has 17 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchil-dren. ■ Her sisters are Mrs. Taylor (Kelburn) and Misses A. L. Hall, and J. Hall (Wadestown). Mrs. Herbert Kirkealdie (Wadcstown) and Mrs. Norman Kirkcaldie (Levin) are daughters-in-law.
