SCHOOL ENTEANCE
MENTAL TESTS PROPOSED
A suggestion that children should enter school according to their mental develop'mcnt instead of' according to their ages" was embodied in a remit submitted to tho annual meeting of the Womon Teachers' Association this morning by the Taranaki delegates. After a brief discussion the remit was defeated, Taranaki being unsupported. In proposing tho remit Mrs. D. M. Buff said that many children 6 years old perhaps varied from 4J:to 7 years in mental development. If children all commenced at tho same mental age their school life would be happier and the teachers' work would be easier. Miss O. E. Sutherland (Masterton) asked who was to apply the test. The children wouldy have to be tested according to a Dominion standard and fow infant teachers had a, sufficient knowledge of- psychology to be able to make the examination. Mrs. A. Fouhy (Mitgterton) contended it was more a matter for the internal management of the school. The children should "ba classified.Sfter they had been enrolled. .. '
