Tennis Club Function. The Knox Tennis Club, Lower Hutt, held an enjoyable "end-of-season" social recently in Knox Schoolroom. The hall was decorated in the club colours by committee members. The patron of the club, Mr. A. D. Thompson, was present, and Mr. A. Aekroyd acted as M.C. During the evening the club captaiiij Mr. M. Davidson, gave a report of the club's activities in the past season. Two teams, he said, had been entered in interclub competitions, and both had acquitted themselves creditably. Opportunity was taken to present two cups donated by Mr. A. Ackroyd, for the winners of the handicap singles competition. The winner of the ladies' cup was Miss E. Beu (run-ner-up Miss F. Hoy), and the men's cup by Mr. M. Davidson (runner-up Mr. K. Nicholson). \ ' ' V Parcel Afternoon at Khand»llanThe Khandallah branch of the Women's National Reserve recently held a parcel afternoon at the residence of Mrs. R. B. Gibbons, Box Hill. Mrs. Guthrie, Miss Wilshire, and Miss 'Kelly were among the many visitors. Mrs. A. B. Gibbons introduced the speakers, Miss GutKrie (president or the .welfare branch of the W.N.R.) and Miss Kelly (matron of Porirua Hospital), who gave very interesting talks. ■&. delicious tea was served by Mrs. triobons and members of the committee. Through the generous response .or. those present a large hamper, of parcels was forwarded to the Pbrirua Hospital. ~. ;■ \- . Apple and Quince Jelly. A correspondent asks for a method of making apple and quince jelly set, when it has only partly done so. Women's Study Circle. Mrs.Ennis was elected president at the recent annual meeting of the Women's Study Circle, when there was a good attendance of nembers. Mrs. Mitchell was elected secretary, and Mrs Bosher, treasurer. Invitations Issued. Invitations have been issued by the Queen Margaret College OI6V Girls' Association for a dance to be held at-the college at the end of the month. The chaperonea will be Mesdames Martin, Dawson, and Hatch, and Miss Irene Wilson, and the committee comprises Misses K. Hoby, E. Hatch, P, Holm, M. Shoosmith, and P. Martin. A Concert Programme. , Mrs. Janette Aplin and members of her company, "The Musical Band Box," gave a delightful concert _last evening in the Methodist Hall, Webb Street, to a large and appreciative audience. Songs were sung by Mrs. Janetto Aplin, Miss Edna Partan, Miss Nellie Bateman, and Mr. R. Hampton Bennett. Miss. Hughes, in a sketch, "Micky the Mouse," and Mr. Arthur Pennington provided the humorous items. Instrumental colos were given by Messrs. Aplin, Sober, and, Bevan. Mr Alex Jackson plnycd the accompaniments, and Mr. Alec Blake (the company's stage manager) wittily announced the various items. After the concert the: Rev. Mr. Brady entertained the performers at supper. ■ ■-...-. Tawa Flat Women's Institute. Mis. Birt presided over a good attendance at the recent meeting of the Tawa Flat Women's Institute, held at "Ye Olde Bull and Bush," which the hostesses, Mesdames A. Woodman, Larsen, Woods, and Miss Woodman had decorated" gaily/ ■''■& table on, the landingwas sot with plates of mixed biscuitsentries in the competition, "best plate of egoless biscuits,", which were judged by Mrs. A. E. Hunt (Johnsonville); The winning plate, that of Mrs. Hoare/ contained .18 different varieties. Three new members were and* one of these, Miss Lawrence, w»s the. winner of a pair of sweet dishes which were raffled. Mr. A. Hunt gave a talk, interspersed with readings, on the subject of "The Boy and his Future." He dealt with the qualities universally desirable in man, and showed by what training these could be fostered and attained. Mrs. Roskruge exhibited a large variety 'of examples of handicraft, cleverly contrived' and : beautifully finished. Members, were especially interested in her demonstration of silhouettes. A vote' of thanks to Mr. Hunt was carried. League of JKothers. :At the meeting of the central branch of the League of Mothers had recently, Mrs. Clarko presided over a very good attendance. Miss Kirk, of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children, was -'the speaker, and gave instances of many cases that came under her notice, and the improvement achieved in some respects. Women had gained ground in some of the remits put forward at the recent conference of the National Council of Women. New Zealand was'better protected than other countries in manyways, saicj. Miss Kirk, who went on to point out the many mistakes that mothers unthinkingly made where their children were concerned. A hearty vote of thanks (proposed <by Miss Clarke) was carried by acclamation. During the afternoon, two" solos were given by Miss Sutherland, and were much enjoyed. Tea; dispersed by Mesdames Oates, Duncan, Dexter, Lappin, and Townley, concluded a very good meeting. . -.. Cleaning White Wool. A correspondent asks for a method of Cleaning a white woollen jumper. ; Mothers' Club at Kewtown. The Newtown Mothers' Club held a very successful and enjoyable social eveiiing recently. A popular programme was submitted, and much amusement caused by two competitions. Mrs. Hill and Mr. Dausch's songs were appreciated by all. Miss Richmond, at the piano, helped towards the entertaining of those present. The success of the evening was due to the efforts of Mrs. Hill and the committee. ; ; Party at Seatoun. An enjoyable evening was spent on Saturday at the Masonic Hall; Seatoun, when Captain and Mrs. A. S. Gibson entertained a number of friends at a dance in honour of their daughter, Miss Joyce Gibson. The hall was tastefully decorated in tones of pink and mauve, and the supper tables with pink Iceland poppies. Mrs. Gibson received her guests, wearing a frock of fuchsia satin, and Miss Joyce Gibson's frock was of cameo pink crepe satin. She carried a posy of cyclamen and carnations. The guests included Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Thorn, Mr. and Mrs. F. Gibson, Captain and Mrs. Mncindoe, Mrs. Oddy, Mrs. E. Morrah, Mr. and Mrs. J. G. A large number of pupils and friends attended a studio dance at Mr. Southern Colledge's Studio on Saturday night. The decorations and many novelties added to the attraction of the; evening, the balloon dance being a very popular item. W. Connell. Obituary. The death has occurred in Auckland of Mrs. Kathleen Thompson, wife of Mr. J. B. Thompson, formerly Undersecretary for Lands, who resided ia Wellington until about eighteen months ago. After Mr. Thompson -retired from the Government service, they left to live in Auckland, and Mrs. Thompson, who before her marriage was ilisg Kathleen Laughton Etimiston, bad been in poor health since Christmas. Her friends' in Wellington will regret to hear th" news. Manx Society Evening. Social evenings and reunions have .become a feature' of the Manx Society's activities. The programme submitted on Saturday evening to a, packed, audience in the'Rechabite Hall comprised solos by Mr. Hampton Bennett, character sketches by Misses D. Hungerford and C. Kelly, and elocutionary numbers by,Mr.Thompson. Excellent dance music 'was; provided by Mr. David Clarke, "and . extras were contributed by Mrs. Moore'and Messrs Sheffield and H. ;Kelly.'. .Mr. Steve Clarke was M.C. The ladies' committee consisted ,of Mesdames Quayle, O. Kelly, W. Kelly, Clarke, and Oats, and was responsible for the dainty supper provided. The competition for the leather writing companion was won byMr. J. Campbell. The evening, closed with the singing of "Elian Vannin" and the National Anthem. '
