HARBOUR BOARD

LABOUR GAINS SEATS

IN CITY AND SUBURBS

Tho i'bsult of the election of four city members of the Harbour Board | has caused a good deal of surprise, for for the first time Labour has captured throe* seats and,,has also taken the two .seats of representatives <■>( the combined districts of the boroughs ofj Potone, Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt. and I Eastbourne, tho Johnsonville Town j Board,' antl the Hutt and Makara, Counties. La-bonr has thus five seats1 on the board out of fifteen, for in

addition to pity and suburban representatives th'ero are two members representing the -Wairarapa district, two the Manawatu district, two represeii' tativos of payers of dues on ships, one representative of payers of other harbour dues, and. ono Government appointee. The almost clean sweep of city and suburban seats by Labour candidates has given soino people the impression that Labour is in a ma,|or.ty on "the board, but that, of course, as not so. Mr. G. A. Troup did not contest a seat on this occasion, and "Mr. H. D. Bennett and Captain F. A. Macihdoe aro shown as defeated on the first count, the three places being filled by Mr. Fraser, M.P., at tho top of the poll, Mr. C. H. Chapman, M.P., who has had previous Harbour Board experience-, and Mr. E. Semplc, M.P. i Mr, Walter Nash; M.P., and tho Hon. Mark Pagan, M.L.C., gained the suburban seats, Mr. Nash by a very large majors ity, and thus the' Labour section of the board is composed wholly of Parlia.mentarians. , There is a difference! of over 200 votes between the tallies of . Messrs." Scmple and Bennett, and though there is a possibility of a change.in position as a result of the final count, this is not considered very likely. ■ The first count figures are as follows: — .. . . Fraser, P. (L.) ............ 13,104 Chapman, C. H. (L.) ...... 12,876 Norwood. C. J.;B. (C.E.) ...'. 11,287 Semple, E. (L.) ............ 11,039 (The above aro elected.) *Bennett, H. D. (C.E.) 10,768 *Macindoe, F. A. (C.E.) .... 9,904 Nimmo, E. H. (C.E.) ....... 8,171 Walsh, M. (L.) ....... 8,114 Darroch; E. (I.) ............ 4,335 Informal' -••■, 1.°»9 Two members of the ■ board are elected by Hutt and Makara County electors, and by the boroughs of Petone, Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt, Eastbourne, and JohnsonvillOj Town Board. There were five nominees,1 and the result of the polling is as follows:— 'Nash, W ;........... 6529 Fagan, Mark .............-,• 2977 (The above are elected.) *Posfc, Captain C.
