LATE SPORTING
ON TRENTHAM TRACKS
THIS MORNING'S GALLOPS
PEGGED EXCHANGE WELL
(By "Rangatira.") . Trentham horses with engagements at Eiecarton and Tauherenikau did their semi-final galloping this morning. The weather was perfect, a fairly heavy frost being followed by bright sunshine for the later workers. A mist obscured the course early, and timing before the breakfast interval was difficult. The trial grass, winch was easy, was in use.
Among the spectators were several ratings of the New Zealand Naval Division who. are at present doing their annual musketry course at Trentham. Mr. F. S. East.on was also a visitor to the track to witness a gallop by his Acre—-Wench gelding, whom, ho has named Te Ua.
Lady Noel (S. Wilson), the first worker, ran half a mile, but could not be timed owing to the mist. Capetown (W. E. Shand) and Cape Fair (G. F. Dick) did a working gallop over a mile in, lmiji 53sec.
Golden Horn (Shand) again went attractively in running a milo in lmin 43s,ee, doing the first half in 51sec, and the last half in 52sec. He was picked up by Quietly (G. Eidgway) below t,ho sis furlongs, and, after going with.her the next. half-mile, drew away to a two lengths' lead at the post. It is a puzzle how this gelding does not .win races. He is to start iv the Bidwill Memorial at Tauhcrenikau on Saturday, .and will lie ridden by the apprentice,. H. F. Gray. : • .
Pegged Exchange (Dick) obtained an advantage over Cottesmore (Wilson) at the beginning of their six furlongs, and, after allowing his older rival to get practically on terms at the top of the straight, finally shot away again near the finish to win".the trial by. a couple of lengths. The full •' distance took lmin 17 3-ssec, and the last halfmile 51 2-ssec. It was an- excellent effort by Pegged Exchange, who will bo ridden by Wilson in the ' C.J.C. Champagne Stakes. -: • \- :■'■".. - Might (J. D. Martin) 'slipped over six furlongs in a rather dearer atmosphere in lmin 16 2-ssec, the last halfmile'in 51 3-osocj but ho was stopping at the finish; Secrocy (Wilson) and Valdarado (Ji. K. Bobertson) were _to have picked him up at-the half-mile, but the former raced oft" - lengths'; iv front, and the latter, as if to/balance the difference, waited till- lie. :.was lengths past.- '■■'■■ ■•■■-' .■■ . ■■•■■ '■'■ ■'/ '■■'.'■ '; • Eminent (Martin) turfed-Saturday's tables on Clangor (Wilson) over amile, drawing iiway at :the finish -to. "beat his team mate home by two and a half lengths in lmin 43 3-ssec. They.went the first half-mile fast, hi 50 l-ssee, naturally tiring over the last, half1 to register only ■, 53 2-ssec. Eminent, as well as Might, will now bo ridden by B. 11. Morris on the first day at Eic-, carton, but K. Voitre will vbo on. i the former in the Great Autumn on.". the. second day. ' '. . :,: : : The air was drier and conditions generally wore better for. galloping after breakfast. : ' "„. ■'. ■
• Cardinal Moon (A. Leach) easily Beat tlio lazy Chile (Wilson) over half a inilo in 51 4-sscc, finishing , three or four lengths in front. Aroma (Shand) likewise accounted for Good Hunting (Wilson), who is still sore, overfivo furlongs in lmin 3 3-ssec, the final halfmile in '50 2-ssoc. .
Quebec (Wilson) showed • excellent speed in galloping away, from Bay Area (Shand), who is- shin -sorb, over half a.niile in 49 2-Ssec. Te Ua'(A. Jenkins) found Colossical (Leach) of little use to him early over six furlongs in lmin 18sec, the last half-mile in 52scc, but 'Colossical appeared to bo running on still well at tho finish about four lengths behind Te Ua. ■ : ■':■.. Paldec (Wilson), working alone, ran flvo furlongs comfortably in lmin 4sec, tho last half-mile in 50sec, ~
Two schooling bouts were provided by the centre's jumping aspirants. Pahu (Jenkins) was sent over tho schooling flight, and acquitted himself in' his usual brilliant style. Tunbridge (Jenkins), after jumping the pony hurdle, also went over the flight of threo schooling hurdles, fencing carefully but accurately. Tunbridgc is to be raced over the country during the winter ,_ .is he jumps rather too high for hurdling. ■ ■ . . ','■■!■ WilsonI's complete'riding book for Tauhercnikau on Saturday comprises Miladi, Good Hunting, Palace, Quebec, Chile, G-rand Blow, and • Clangor (if started in the hack event). A. KiccaTton on Monday' ho will ride Martian Chief, Pegged Exchange, Chief Light, Concentrate,. Cottesmore, and .probably Acceptable. In the Autumn he will be on Concentrate, unless Martian Chief cams the penalty. . Other ■ Tauherenikau ■ riding, engagements announced include:—rGv Eidgway, Quietly, Reno Belle, and Lady : Parn; W. E. Sliand, Capetown; .and.G-. F. Dick,. Melisande. A. Jenkins will be at Feildiug, where his mounts will include Miss Hushabye, Thomist, and Takakua. ' ■ :
