DIPHTHERIA PREVALENT

Owing to the prevalence of diphtheria infection in the district, the Longburn School Committee has received, authority to close the school at once, .. ■ . ." ' ' /.'■',- '• , ;.'. A visit to r the school was, made by Dr; Elizabeth Gurin, schools medical last Thursday, and she; reported a number of cases of infection, while several "carriers" were : aliso detected. Tho school will accordingly be closed until the Easter Vacation terminates, probably reopening on. April 19. Generally speaking, the cases reported at the school are. of. a .mild type. ■ : •■:■■ V. .--' ~:... .". .' ■ . : A. number of diphtheria ■ infections have alsp ; bcen reported in the Longburn district during tho -past few weeks, but it is' understood that- the outbreak' affords no cause for undue alarm. ... • Four causes of actual diphtheria have been admitted to tho Palinerston North Public Hospital, while a number of suspected cases are also in isolation.
