TAIL CAUGHT IN ROPE
PILOT'S NARROW ESCAPE
(Received April 11, 10 a.m.) LONDON, April 10. While rehearsing tho operation of r»i fuelling for a non-stop flight to Australia, Sir Alan Cobham's co-pilot, Squadron-Leader "Hclmorc, lowered a rope as a preliminary to lowering tho petrol pipe. Helmore's mechanic -lost grip of the rope, which twisted itself round the tail, causing the machino to hang for a minute noso downwards, while Helmore struggled with the controls. Thciv the rope snapped and- thu machine dropped like a stone until 300. feet above the sea, when Helmore regained control and flew to the aeroi drome.
