MATERNAL WELFARE
DECREASE IN MORTALITY
The preliminary .figures of deaths from puerperal causes for 1932 have now been mado available by the Census and Statistics Office to. the Health Department, and show a gratifying decreaso in comparison with the figures of previous years. Tho rate of 3.94 per thousand live births is the lowest recorded since 1913, and when it is remembered that the proportion of first births is now much higher than was tho caso twenty years ago the result is regarded as being still more gratifying. It is particularly pleasing to notice that the number of deaths from puerperal septicaemia" (excluding those following abortion) was only 12 in 1932, as compared with 18 in 1931, and 56 as recently as 1927. Deaths from septic conditions following abortion show a welcome, if small, fall, being 25' for 1932 as compared with 29 in 1931.
