BOWLING

SEATOUN CLUB

.The Seatoun Bowling Club celebrated its 21st, birthday by a double function on Saturday, April 1, combining ladies' day with its birthday party. In the combined games the ladies played as leads and two's, the position of'three and skip being taken by the men 'bowlers!. . At the conclusion of, the games a birthday tea was served in the pavilion, the room being tastefully decorated with the nlub colours, green and gold. The gathering was a large one, Many visitors and friends being" present. Mr. W. L. Page, president, supported by Mrs! Page, presided. A special feature was the lighting of the 21 candles surrounding the birthday cake. , To Mr. Cyril MeFarlane, as one of the founders of the club, fell the honour of lighting the- first candle. Mr. Page followed Mr. .MeFarlane. The remaining candles were lighted . by former presidents or the -wives of such, former directors, and,the present directors.- ---: A most enjoyable afternoon was spent, the ■ weafher, being ideal for the occasion. The contrast between the surroundings when the green was first opened in January, 1913, is most marked, as seen in old photographs.' At that time there were no houses anywhere near the green, the one-storey pavilion being an isolated landmark. - The .tram shelter stood almost alone in a deserted street, its one neighbour being the tea kiosk. Now Dundas Street, is a busy shopping area, and th> bowling green -with its two-storey pavilion is surrounded by. houses and gardens. • _ ■ Ihe tennis courts, croquet, and bowling greens are one of the assets. of Seatoun, giving healthy recreation to young and old of both sexes. The club is to be congratulated 'that.brilliant and faultless, days marked both its opening day in 1913 and its 21st birthday in 1933.
