NATIVE RATES
COMMITTEE TO INQUIRE
RELIEF FOR LOCAL BODIES
The Prime- Minister (the Et. Hon. G. W. Forbes) stated today that, in accordance- with a statement which hemade in the House of Representatives during the latter part of last session, a committee has been set up to inquire into matters relating' to the rating <of Native lands. This inquiry has been asked for by several local bodies who were having much difficulty with their finances by reason of the non-payment of Native rates. ■.' . •-.:.. ■■,■■■■
A committee of three- has therefore been apx)ointed, tho -Hon. A. D. McLeod, M.P., being, chairman, and having associated with him Chief Judge R. N. Jones, of. the Native1 Affairs Department, and Mr. J. H. Reid, chairman of the Opotiki County Council.'
• "It is hoped that as the result of the committee's investigations and recommendations- these matters of the' rating of Native lands and of the collection of Native, rates will be placed on a more satisfactory basis," said Mr. Forbes. ■
