HUTT RIVER BOARD
PAST YEAR'S FINANCES
The fortnightly meeting of the Hutt River Board was held last evening, Mr. F. J. Jones (chairman) presiding. The secretary (Mr. A. J. Gearing) reported that a proposal to lease a piece of land in Connolly Street had fallen through, and that the next highest tender was from the Whippet Racing Club. The club proposed holding Sunday picnics on the" ground, but the board objected, and the secretary was instructed to call for fresh tenders unless satisfactory arrangements could be made with the outgoing tenant. The secretary produced the balancesheet for the year ended March 31, 1933, which showed that the rates struck were £6065, and rates for the current year collected £3843, arrears''in rates collected £784, and 10 per cent, penalty £66. The rates outstanding" for the current ..year were £2225, as against £1900 last year. .
In spite of a serious decline in revenue, especially.by way q£ royalties, the year had ended with a credit balance of £481. The secretary (Mr: A. J. Gearing) was cordially congratulated on the position, and on his prompt presentation of the balancesheet. It was decided to employ'three relief workers for an extra day per week so thjit the work of raising" the stopbanks, which has been commenced, could proceed continuously; '
