AN OVERDUE SUCCESS

CHOPIN WINS TAMATETE

Chopin, who has not raced with the same luck this season as he had last season, was not out of his turn in scoring a decisive win in the Tamatete Handicap, the day's main open event, and a race in which he was very narrowly beaten last year.- Voitre held him well bacs till they were approaching the straight, but when he asked him to go after the leaders he raced brilliantly down the outside to cut down La Poupec, who was attempting similar,.rtaflties, a. short way below the distance, and to continue on and win with something in hand by half a length. La Poupee, with another change of riders, also waited for a run down tlic outside in the straight, but she was always closer to the front than the winner. She finished well, but did not have a chance with Chopin. View Halloo, the favourite, made sure of not being trapped again by soon sacri-' nemg a prominent early position just behind First Acre and Spearful and droppingback to the rear. He was still there, at the straight entrance, and as the field had then lengthened out he would have had to do the phenomenal to have won. He

finished powerfully into third place a length and a half away, and in the short straight such an effort was above the ordinary.

Shrewd was a close fourth, but he was always handy and had his chance had he been good enough. First Acre, who made all the running to the straight, weakened into fifth place.. He should have been on his way to Australia, but could not be connected in time at Auckland because of the felips on the Main Trunk. Arrqw Lad, after being sent from the rear up to First Acre in the back stretch, also failed to run on when later pressure came. Spearful, second favourite on the win machine, was in an excellent position behind First Acre arid Arrow Lad at the straight entrance, but he was unable to take advantage of it and finished last es: cept for Grand Jury.
