PEOPLING AUSTRALIA
DEAN INGE'S PLAN
LONDON, March 12,
Dr. Inge, Dean of St. Paul's Cathedral, elaborating his address, told "The Daily Telegraph" that he agreed to the "White Australia" policy, but thought that Australia must soon commence populating her vast spaces with Britons to prevent an Asiatic invasion, which, once begun, would result in people pouring in like flies.
There was a certain amount of truth in the suggestion that Australia was adopting a "dog in the manger attitude." It could support at least 50,000,000 people instead of 6,000,000. "I am convinced that the self-con-tained 'county' communities of the right type would be successful," he said, "as counties would be proud to be interested in their kinsfolk and would insist on buying only Australian goods. There would be difficulties, but the scheme is worth trying."
