MR. J. H. BAXTER

The death occurred on Friday at his residence, Hardy Street, Nelson, of Mr. J. H. Baxter, manager of the Nelson branch of the Union Bank of Australia, following on a serious operation about five months ago. During the short time the late Mr. Baxter had been in Nelson he made a. wide circle of friends, both among the business community and the general public, and his death at the comparatively early age of 45 years will be very deeply regretted.. Mr. Baxter was born in Victoria,, and joined the bank in 1904 at Invercargill. He was then transferred to the inspectorate branch at Wellington, later going to Wanganui as accountant. It was while stationed at Wanganui that Mr. Baxter was one of the chief movers m the formation of the New Zealand Bank Orßcers' Guild, and he was its first president and one of its first life members. .Subsequently Mr. Baxter was stationed, at Auckland, from where he went to Helensville as manager. Later he returned to Auckland and opened the Custom Street branch of the bank. In July of 1930 % Mr. Baxter was transferred to Nelson as manager. It was indicative of Mr. Baxter's strong personality and character that in the few years he had been in Nelson .he became- prominent in all organisations with which he was connected. He was a vestryman of the Cathedral parish, was on the committees of the Nelson Club and the Nelson Bowling Club, and was a prominent golfer. To all the deliberations of these bodies he brought a -wide experience and knowledge which were invaluable, and his place will be hard to fill. Mr. Baxter was also a member of the Victory Lodge of Freemasons. As a bowler he''was a prominent skip, and at golf won the junior championship of the Nelson Club last year. He was popular with his associates, who will deplore the passing of a keen sportsman and one who always* "played the game." To the widow and two young daughters the greatest sympathy will.be extended in their bereavement. Flags were flying halfmast today from business premises and from the Nelson bowling green and the Nelson Club as a mark of respect to the memory of the late Mr. Baxter.
