A BOROUGH'S FINANCES
(To the Etfitor.)
Sir,—Without wishing to discount in any way the excellent; work of Birkenheads present Mayor, i^Mr. Geo. Mills I would remind "Belief Worker" that a borough overdraft in Augtist of any year : is quite usual and is annually arranged for with the bank. It is equally usual for the rate income from August -to March to wipe out the- overdraft., Mr. Mills, - however, is to be- congratijlated 'on' having reduced overhead, no eaay taslf in a borough which for many.-jrears has been.-so economically managed that the rates are less than one-fifth, of" tht tee. of some of the other Auckland suburbs. Birkenhead councils through the "boom.-" years ",'consistently refused to adopt tic spendthrift tactics- indulged m by 99 per .cent, of the other local bodies in Nev r Zealand, arid in consequence the borough is in: a very happy position , today. In 'Mr;'" Mills, Birkenhead has a -worthy successor to the late Mr. J. P. McPhail, and it is to be hoped that he will decide ±o again offer his services at the coming election.—l am etc., , ■. ■ .
EX-RESIDENT.
