RED MANFRED SCORES

FAST TIME IN NURSERY

Red Manfred made some amends for his first day's failure by scoring a decisive victory over a second-rate field of two-year-olds in the Plunket Nursery Handicap. He Was last when first picked up in the running, apparently the result of early interference, but he came home very solidly to win with ease by a good length from the pacemaking Lady Nan. The time for Red Manfred's five furlongs was exceptionally fast, the 5834 sec registered being only a quarter of a second slower than Limited's course record, made as a three-year-old under 8.6, and being only three-quarters of a second slower than Machine Gun's Australian and New Zealand record.

Trivet ran about a lot and was nearly down at one point., She finished fourth, but was never a prospect for any superior placing. Gay Sheila, who was with Lady Nan in front early, was the only, other near the places at the finish. After the race an inquiry was held by the stewards into interference caused to Red Manfred and Trivet shortly after the start. The stewards considered that the trouble was caused through the outside horses coining in too quickly, but as the .blame could not be attached to anyone no action was taken-
