A NUDE BATHEK
AT ORIENTAL BAY,
Having teen the cause of a mild sensation at Oriental Bay on Saturday afternoon by going in for a swim, entirely without clothes, Davia Clarke ATcKee, a- waterside worker, aged 41, appeared before Mr.'E. Page, S.M., today at the Magistrate's Court. He pleaded guilty to charges of wilful obscene exposure and drunkenness.
Explaining the case for tho police, Senior-Sergeant Dempsey said that some time after 1 o'clock on Saturday the accused, who was in. a drunken condition, went round, to Oriental Bay. He completely undressed on the beach, and went into the water and swam or paddled about for some time. The police were telephoned for, and when a constable arrived on the scene the accused was dressing himself near the sea wall. At that time a number of boys and girls of various ages were playing about the beach. Some distance away were some women who could not have avoided seeing the accused if they had looked.
Mr. Page: "Was he very drunk? The Senior-Sergeant: The constable gays he questioned the man about going into the water without a bathing suit on, and he said that he was not doing any harm. .. . The man seemed to know at that time what he was doing.
The accused told the Magistrate that he had. had a lot of drink on Saturday morning, and did not know how he got round to Oriental Bay or' into the water. "When I was in the water," said the accused, "I realised my position. As far as I remember, I took as much sea-weed as I could get and put it round myself before I came out. There was no one within thirty or forty yards of me."
Mr. Page fined the accused £.10, in default 21 days' imprisonment, on the charge of obscene exposure, and convicted and discharged Kirn on the charge of drunkenness. The Magistrate refused a request for time to pay, ■ but said that the police would afford him facilities to conftnunicate with anyone who could assist him.
