SCHOLARSHIP WINNER
AT THE CONTROLS OF THE
SOUTHERN CROSS
Sir Charles had proposed to take up Mr. G. P. Cachemaille, the winner of the first section of the "Evening Post" Aviation Scholarship, in his first dual instructional flight this morning in the course of training for qualification as a full "A" pilot, but as weather conditions at Eongotai were altogether unsuitable for light machine instruction, Sir Charles suggested that Mr. Cachemaille should share the controls of the Southern. Cross on the Sounds flight. Mr. Cachemaille accordingly took the place of the second pilot in the big machine, and when an altitude of about 3000 feet was reached and the machine was flying in smooth air was given the controls on both outward and return trips.
There are certainly very few who can claim to have had"their first lesson in flying in a machine like the Southern Cross.
