SCHOOL TEXT BOOKS
MASTER PRINTERS' RESOLUTION '
The Federation of Master Printers of New Zealand (Incorporated) at the annual conference held in Wellington this week, adopted the following resolution regarding school text books:—"That this annual conference of the Federation of Master Printers of New Zealand emphatically protests against the questionable and inequitable action of the Minister of Education in extending, before the due date, the arrangement for the printing of the primary school books for a further four years. The federation affirms that this action was in direct opposition to the alternative recommendations of the National Expenditure Commission of 1032. These were:—(a) An extension of the present arrangement whereby the publishers were to immediately reduce the retail prices of the books by at last 25 per cent, (on average), and agree to hand over the New Zealand copyright to the Department at the expiration of the extended period at a cost not exceeding £500. . (b) The alternative is that the Department should prepare fresh manuscript and call for, tenders for the publication of a new series of books."
The federation' further contends: (1) That this action of the Minister was in opposition to and without consideration of the petition, then before Parliament.' signed by over 19,000 parenfc of school children; (2) that it constituted a severe and unwarrantable imposition upon the primary school educational facilities of New Zealand.
