A BOROUGH'S FINANCES

(To the Editor.)

( Sir,—Some months ago I read in the "Evening Post" of the nomination as Mayor o£ Birkenhead, New Zealand, of Mr. George Mills, of Athabasca Landing, Canada. Today, with great interest, I read in the Auckland "Star" the attached paragraph. Mr. Mills, by his practical common sense, sets a splendid example to the Mayors of other towns by provin" that it is possible to Teduce the country's expenditure. Considering that Mr. Mills is an outsider, his plucky and successful attempt against big odds prove him to be the right man in a tight place. Birkenhead is to be congratulated on her choice of a Mayor.—l am, etc.,

RELIEF WORKER,

The paragraph states.that the Mayor reviewing the finances of the borough said that ivhen he took office in August last there was an overdraft of £5800, £1000 of commitments, and a letter from the bank insisting that the overdraft should be reduced. Suite then the over, dratt had been wiped out, and there was

now a credit, due to the policy of economy that had been followed. Overhead expenditure had been curtailed by nearly half, and the borough'was now in a sound position. The meeting carried ;i resolution thanking the Mayor for his efforts on behalf of the borouph, and approving of his policy. A requisition1 signed by over 100 relief workers was presented asking the Mayor to offer himself for another term of office. Sir. Mills has deferred his decision. "
