DISTRESS RELIEF
~ PRESBYTERY INQUIRY
Tlio_ serious situation •which is ' developing in relation to men on relief works was brought under the" notice of the Wellington Presbytery on Tuesday by the Rev. D. M. Hereus. The position, he said, was that the City Council was no longer ablo to provide work and supervision for many of the men, who were therefore being1 tbld that they must be placed on a dole. The amount of this dole was.in all-cases just fifty per cent, of what the men had been receiving in the past as relief pay, thus leading to extreme hardship, as in many cases tho total dole promised to be less than1 the amount of the rent.
Several other members of the Presbytery 'confirmed this information, and one member pointed, to the dissatisfaction widely prevalent among married relief workers, who wove being urged to go to camp or onto farms, thus sacrificing tr^at remained 'of their family life
The ■whole matter was referred to the public questions committee of tho Presbytery for immediate investigation and report,' if possible with suggested linns of action.
