HUTT BUTCHER FINED
T. C. H. Tutty was 'charged "in the Lower Hutt Magistrate's Court yesterday with having created a nuisance on premises in the Phoenix Buildings, High Street, b*y allowing the accumulation of animal matter and filth in-such a state as to be offensive. He pleaded not guilty, but Was convicted and fined 30s. appearing for the Lower Hutt Borough Council, which brought the prosecution, Mr. C.R: Barrett said that Tutty had been the occupier of a butcher's shop in i the Phoenix Buildings. He vacated it ,on Satmday, -March. 4, and on Monday the borough inspectors visited the 1 premises and found small bits of meat, some in the first stage of putrefaction, 'numerous flies, dirty water, and bags of i refuse, and an offensive odour was also noticed. The borough inspector gave Tutty an opportunity to clean the shop iup before proceedings were instituted, but although Tutty did a little, he did jnot clean the place pioperly. I Joseph Fletcher, chief borough inspector, and James Ashforth, assistant borough I inspector, gave detailed evidence as to the filthy state of the shop. "The whole 'place, was in a dirty and disgraceful condition," said Mr. Fletcher. , -The defendant said that the' charge should have been made against the Hutt .Central Meat Co., for which he-was managing the shop,' but he expressed ' his 1 willingness to defend the charge as against i himself. He made a long explanation, the substance of which was that he had arranged with a soap company to remove I the meat and bones on Monday but the company had failed to do.so.
"It was your duty to leave the place perfectly clean," said, Mr. J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M. "You'll have to pay-for all the trouble you've given." A fine of 30s and costs was imposed.
