OBITUARY

MR. LOUIS COHEN

The death is reported of Mr. Louis Cohen, a much respected resident of Wanganui.

The late Mr. Cohen was born in New South Wales in 1863, and came to New Zealand when a child. He received his early education at the West Christchurch School and Christ's College, and later was a student at Canterbury College, and the New Zealand University. He was senior scholar at the latter institution in 1882. He qualified for his B.A. the following year and for his M.A. in 1884, taking tho latter degree with double honours. Ho was admitted to the Bar in 188G, and practised in Marton and in Wanganui since 1903. He was the first graduate to be elected to the Canterbury College Board of Governors. /Mr. Cohen took an active interest in sport and music. He was •on the executive of the New Zealand Trotting Conference, and tho New Zealand Bowling Council, president of the New Zealand Boxing Council, president of the Wanganui Trotting Club, and the Wanganui West Coast Athletic Centre. He was president of tho AVanganui Operatic Society, and was for thirteen years president of tho North Island Brass Bands' Association. Mr. Coheu had interests in other directions also, being the founder of the Wanganui Rotary Club and the Wanganui Commercial Club. Ho was also an houorarv director of tho Sarjcant Gallery.
