Police eases in the Magistrate's Court today were dealt with by Mr. E. Page,
Two first offenders for drunkenness, who did not appear, were each find 10s, the amount of their, bail. , After pleading guilty to three offences of false pretences committed at Paeroa and Thames in 1926, and one charge of theft at Wellington this year, William Granville Haldane Stevens, alias Bull, alias Cartwright, was remanded until March 22 on the application of DetectiveSergeant Eevell, who said there were other matters requiring investigation. Angus Victor McLaggan, described as a clerk, aged 23, who told an employer that he had paid for some wood when he had not, was admitted to probation for twelve months, on a-charge of obtaining 10s from Edward Bowers by false pretences. '-"I think he is worth a chance, in spite of a previous conviction," said' the Probation 'Officer (Mr. T. P. Mills). "He seems a fairly decent young fellow .. . . and is trying to battle on-his own."
