PLAYERS' INSURANCE

IN RUGBY LEAGUE CODE

A SCHEME DESIRED

A recommendation that the incoming committee should consider the matter of inaugurating an injured players' insurance scheme was made at the annual meeting of the Wellington Eugby League last night over which Mr. L. Davis presided. The question was discussed at length, several delegates considering that the code could not expect to advance until some provision was made for compensation to be paid to injured players.

In bringing the matter before the meeting, Mr. A. V. Handysides said that players would not join up with the league because there was no scheme for the payment of injured players.

The secretary (Mr. P. B. Hogan) said that owing to the financial conditions it was impossible, to inaugurate such a scheme at present. He thought it was a matter for the clubs.

Mr. A. Brown considered that the responsibility belonged to the centre, and the game would nev.er prosper locally -without an accident' fund. He thought that £500 could be raised, by means of a raffle.

The suggestion that the matter should be considered at a special meeting at which the co-operation of the clubs could be sought was made by Mr. H. Knight, who said that, while it was very desirable to have such a scheme, he could not see how it could be started without the necessary funds.

It was decided to make a recommendation, t.o the incoming committee that it should go' into the matter and report to the clubs. -

When, the matter of grounds in the Hutt Valley was being discussed Mr. W.'CoTeoran said he thought that the oval at Hutt Park would be available for the coming season.

According to the annual report, the prospects for the coming season were bright, although last season closed with a deficit of '£50. New clubs were being formed, and. many new members were offering. Either an Australian side or a prominent Sydney club team was expected to visit Wellington, and the West Coast was desirous of sending a team here.

The following officers were etected:— President, Mr. F. S. Ball; additional vice-presidents, Messrs. J. Quinn and A. Coy; representatives of clubs on x the Management Committee, Messrs. E. Manion and M. Jefferson.
